still thinking about boston. this weekend eli came up for common ground, trading boston for st. albans. (only very recently have i started thinking of "st. albans" as a town name rather than a hard-wired concept.) a list of some things that happened, all set in gold-blue skies with waving wildflower fields:

saw a meteor flare out by the dragon cement plant, just before home. i remember a green and red tail. spectacular; my second atmospheric event with eli.

mom showing us the colossal bugbane in the dark, spotlit yard, hundreds of little white moths swirling up and away as we disturbed the stalks. impatient like squirrels, they fluttered around our heads waiting for us to leave. on the walk inside we saw a few of them struggling in the staggering network of spiderwebs than spans the front of the house.

eli and i drove to unity where we ate things (including a free bloomin onion), purchased small items, ran into alexandra, james, and emily, smelled a lot of smells, and sat in a parking lot field for an hour listening to mix tapes lisa made me back in 2001. bitch and animal, drums and tuba.

dad worked too much, a stressed out look of disbelief hovering over his face all weekend. he did a really good job. mom repeated things a lot and looked, reassuringly, much more like herself than she did three weeks ago, during surgery.

eli and i talked late at night, the sound of crickets drifting in through the windows along with the crisp, season-shifting air.

alex called a few times, a surprisingly neutrally-welcome punctuation of one reality into another. i was glad he did, and am anticipating calling him as i write this.

the leaves were two weeks further along up there than down here. those reds in the wetlands. eli and i drove back to the highway on (the) 23, looking at fields on the curves of the road and thinking about things.
