two random interactions of today:

walking to work in the damp, early morning fog rolling up from the pier. passing the courthouse, lawyers trickling in, one of them standing on the lawn with his dog for a minute before going in. two blocks later, ending up in the elevator with the same man. golden retriver right there in the elevator, no discernable service dog indicators. he works at the law firm on the third floor of my building. commenting on his dog, i said i'd never seen him before. he said he brings her everyday. we shook hands.

stopped at the light just past the rite aid on congress street on my way home from annie's (and my first watching of grey's anatomy). a man about my age walking down the empty, rain-reflective street wearing a suit and red anorak. singing along to the born ruffians, i watched him walk down the hill. he caught my eye through the window, held it, smiled, mouthed "hello," and waved happily, hand cupping the air and rotating side to side.

this is more transient-yet-substantial interaction than i've had in all the months i've been here. something in the unnervingly warm, softly lit air.
